West Wizard silk

West Wizard

WEST WIZARD will have no issues with these testing ground conditions, and he has now slipped to a workable mark on the pick of his form. A close second on his only previous course run, the reapplied blinkers are backed to bring about the improvement needed for him to land this contest.

A close fourth in a Grade 2 bumper at Aintree back in April 2018, MEEP MEEP failed to build on that over hurdles last season, but she looks a potential improver now handicapping over this distance, and these soft ground conditions hold no fears.

ANJILINA finished a respectable second at Sedgefield in March, and although she has not been at that level in her two starts since, the return to these softer ground conditions looks a notable plus for her chances today. Making her handicap debut off a lowly opening mark, with a first-time tongue-tie applied, it would be no shock to see her put up a much-improved performance.

It is difficult to see past the Irish raider AGUSTA GOLD, who was a classy novice hurdler last season, finishing second in Listed company at Cheltenham in April. This daughter of Gold Well got off the mark at the third attempt in this sphere when running out a wide-margin winner of a beginners’ chase at Thurles last month, and she is taken to put that race fitness advantage to good use by landing the spoils today.

Skiddaw Tara silk

Skiddaw Tara

Looks to have more ability than his jumping allowed him to show on hurdles debut recently; needs to learn from that experience but it’s possible he will & in-form yard’s runners always dangerous here.

The vote goes to COMMODORE, who looked a stayer going places when scoring at Sandown when last seen in March. The striking grey has been pushed up thirteen pounds for that success, but he remains open to improvement in this sphere, and he returns to action today with his yard currently in flying form.

Western Climate silk

Western Climate

Henry Oliver’s WESTERN CLIMATE was well backed for his stable debut at Stratford last month and showed up well for a long way prior to falling at the final fence. He arrives here running off the same mark, and as all three of his wins have been recorded on right-handed tracks, the return to this venue looks a notable plus for his chances today.

Having shaped well in staying handicaps on the level the last thrice, RIVER ICON makes her return to hurdles today running off what looks a workable mark. She has won on testing ground in the past, so these conditions should hold no fears, and her yard has been in respectable form of late.

Truckin Away silk

Truckin Away

A competitive novices’ handicap chase in prospect here, with the vote going to Philip Hobbs’ TRUCKIN AWAY. From the family of Welsh Grand National winner Righthand Man, this gelding had some smart novice form to his name over hurdles last season. He jumped out to his right on last month’s chase debut at Chepstow, so should appreciate going back this way round, and the addition of a first-time tongue-tie looks a notable one.

River Frost silk

River Frost

Having looked a smart prospect over hurdles earlier in his career, Ben Haslam’s RIVER FROST gets the vote this afternoon. Alain Cawley’s mount has struggled over fences the last thrice, but he now makes the switch to timber in what looks a modest affair, and these ground conditions should not inconvenience.

Preference is for CHTI BALKO, who has gained his last two wins on bottomless ground, the most recent of those coming off three pounds lower at Haydock. Placed off significantly higher marks last season, Donald McCain’s charge now looks handicapped to win again, with a recent spin around Ffos Las likely to have blown away any cobwebs.

Esprit Du Large silk

Esprit Du Large

Finished strongly into 2nd on chasing debut last month; will improve for this longer trip & any further rain won’t be a problem; yard also boast a fine record at this track.

Bafana Blue has won three of his last four starts and is likely to be in the shake-up once again this afternoon, but at a more attractive price, POLYDORA gets the nod. This seven-year-old son of Milan disappointed in a Grade 3 at Aintree when last seen in April, but this is a considerably weaker affair, and his record fresh is encouraging. Representing last year’s winning yard, he is taken to land the spoils this afternoon.

Nordic Combined silk

Nordic Combined

This can go the way of NORDIC COMBINED, who was useful on the level at his peak. He is yet to win from his eight starts since sent over hurdles but had some smart novice/maiden form to his name in this sphere last season and ran well in defeat in a much stronger race at Ascot on his seasonal reappearance earlier this month.

According To Alex silk

According To Alex

Didn’t show an excessive amount on bumper debut last year but looks the type to do better over hurdles & yard boast a fine 27% strike-rate here; could be a live contender at a price.

Queens Cave silk

Queens Cave

Boasts some strong bumper form and finished runner-up on hurdling reappearance despite being weak in the market, winner has since gone in again in a good race and this mare has plenty of potential.
