Trainer who’s 4/7 at Ripon sends sole runner on 446-mile Monday round trip

Ripon Racecourse

It’s a busy Monday of action, as we start the new week with seven race meetings. The afternoon action comes from Kempton, Naas, Cork, Ripon and Newcastle, with Carlisle and Windsor taking over in the evening.

We’ll have horse racing tips for all the action, but an interesting statistic has cropped up at Ripon. Roger Charlton has enjoyed plenty of success there with a select few runners in the last five years. Four of his last seven runners have scored, and he’s 1-1 in 2021 too.

He has a sole representative at the Northern venue on Monday and that runner needs plenty of close attention. We’ve analysed his chances below, to see whether Charlton can remain unbeaten at Ripon this year.

4.12 Ripon – Never So Bold Handicap

The runner in question is Big Boy Bobby, who has yet to score in five racecourse visits. He showed ability in three opening starts at around the mile, but as a son of Vadamos, it’s been no surprise to see him improve for the step up to ten furlongs in handicaps.

Although well held on handicap debut, he showed the benefit of race fitness when beaten a neck at Nottingham last time. Being keen in the early stages ultimately cost him, holding every chance but arriving on the scene just too late under Richard Kingscote.

On his third start of the year, he should be just right now in terms of race fitness. He’s edged up two pounds for that narrow defeat, but connections now reach for the cheekpieces and that should eke out further improvement from Charlton’s charge.

The yard overall is in great form at present, with four winners from their last 19 runners. That isn’t to be scoffed at and it only enhances the chances of this Paul & Clare Rooney-owned gelding.
