York Ebor Handicap Runners

Pablo Escobarr

Deservedly breaking through at Group level on his latest start, he brings plenty of class to the contest. He landed the Group 3 Glorious Stakes at Goodwood last month and has been deadly consistent this term. Today’s step up in distance does raise question marks, but he was placed in a Listed handicap off a pound lower back in January.

True Self

An Irish raider for Willie Mullins, she’s had some very tough tasks in 2020. Behind Magical on seasonal return at the Curragh, she did run below par in the Munster Oaks when last seen. A return to fourteen furlongs should suit and she’s not handicapped out of things if running to her very best.

Fujaria Prince

Six-year-old who has endured a stop-start career thus far, showing progressive form last season with a win and two placed efforts in handicaps. Having his first start for nearly a year when scoring impressive at Ascot off nine pounds lower. Totally unexposed and only his second try over the distance; plenty more to come.

Monica Sheriff

Has won all five of her starts since debut, including a Group 3 at Saint Cloud when last seen in October. She remains completely unexposed and there should be plenty more to come, but the absence has to be a worry and she’d prefer the ground much softer than this.

Trueshan

Has won five of his last seven starts, going close on return in a Newmarket Listed race. Back to winning ways in the same grade at Haydock last time, getting up in the final stride. Should relish a strongly-run fourteen furlongs and has to be entered into calculations.

York Ebor Handicap Tip

Pondus

This year’s Ebor can go the way of Ireland, Joseph O’Brien and PONDUS. He was previously with James Fanshawe, where he was placed at Group 3 level. He’s had just the three starts for O’Brien, off the mark at the second attempt in a Listed race.

He sits on a very workable rating and a strongly run fourteen furlongs should suit him down the the ground. Jamie Spencer is an eye-catching jockey booking and there is a huge amount to like about his chances.

York Ebor Handicap Stats and Trends

  • 9 of the last 10 winners were carrying 9st or more
  • 9 of the last 10 winners were aged five or older
  • 7 of the last 10 winners were drawn in Stall 15 or higher
  • 3 of the last 10 winners were trained in Ireland
  • 3 of the last 10 winners had claimers aboard

Class has tended to prevail in recent renewals of the Ebor, with the vast majority carrying 9st or more. In this years renewal at least, that means you’re looking at a horse rated 102 or higher. Age has been a factor too, with the vast majority of victors being aged five or older. That will boost the chances of Fujaira Prince, True Self and Deja towards the front of the market.

York Ebor Handicap Draw Bias

As you can see from the trends, in recent years, it has been favoured to be drawn higher. Pablo Escobarr and Monica Sheriff are drawn in stalls 20 and 21 respectively, which is a boost to their chances. Both Trueshan and True Self are drawn in single digits, would be seen as negatives to their chances.
