Thursday’s racing: Appleby’s red-hot form, go low at Pontefract and Irish raiders
Charlie Appleby’s last five runners have all won so his sole representative on Thursday needs to go under close consideration. Low drawn horses have a significant advantage over certain trips at Pontefract so we’ve picked out a couple of runners with advantageous draws and there are a few Irish raiders heading over to Perth. Charlie Appleby is on fire
Charlie Appleby is operating at a strike-rate of 62 per cent in the last fortnight and his last five runners have all won. He is set to have just one runner at Newmarket on Thursday and the horse in question will be popular in the betting.
Code Of Honour is a son of Frankel and his dam is related to Group 1 winner Farhh. Appleby has a 33 per cent strike-rate with juvenile newcomers at Newmarket and that bodes well for a big run. It would be no surprise if the two-year-old gets his career off to a winning start.
Go low at Pontefract
The stats suggest that there’s a significant advantage to being drawn low over certain trips at Pontefract so we’ve selected some horses to follow with that in mind.
Silverella has the perfect draw in stall one and she appreciated the step up to a mile when winning nicely at Goodwood on her second start. Further progress can’t be ruled out here and the Marcus Tregoning-trained filly should be in the mix once again.
Be Patient is a consistent performer and remains unexposed, having had just five starts so far, and he has a good draw in stall three. He had no chance with an impressive winner when third at Newmarket last time out and the drop back in trip will suit on the evidence of that performance.
Irish raiders at Perth
John McConnell’s Kingside Lady was an impressive winner of a point-to-point in May and also won by a couple of lengths in a Wexford maiden hurdle last month. There should be more to come from her.
Juke Hill represents the Gordon Elliott yard and we probably haven’t seen the best of him yet, especially over fences. He’s sliding down the weights and will be competitive sooner or later.
