Varzi made his debut in a decent novice at York in May and produced a fair performance to finish second. He’s entitled to improve for that run and his pedigree suggests the step up in trip will help. This looks like a good opportunity to get off the mark.
Luna Celeste has been very consistent so far this season, with two wins and two seconds to her name in just four starts, and another big run is expected here. Tom Clover’s filly remains lightly raced and having won at Nottingham last time out, she’s worth keeping on side.
America Queen was a useful two-year-old last term and she wasn’t disgraced when fourth behind True Love in the Cheveley Park Stakes. A narrow second in the Nell Gwyn on seasonal debut, she was a close fourth in a Group 3 over this trip last time and a similar effort should be enough here.
Sam England’s Jez Bomb has a 67 per cent strike-rate at Pontefract and has won here twice in his last three starts. The first of those wins came over a shorter trip but he scored with loads in hand over this trip last time out. A 7lb rise might not be enough to stop him.
Fluorescence cam very close to a return to winning ways when a very narrow third at Hamilton last time out and she also wasn’t beaten far when fourth in an Ayr Listed race back in June. The handicapper has responded with a 2lb rise but she’s good enough to go close here.
Long distance trips have unlocked Campeona’s true potential so it’s no surprise that she struggled over shorter distance last term. Completing her hat-trick at Lingfield last time out, a 2lb rise shouldn’t make much difference and there should be more to come.
Rare Change was a winner on his only previous visit to Pontefract and is currently only rated 1lb higher than when winning by three lengths on that occasion. Richard Hughes’ gelding won at Goodwood earlier on in the season and is entitled to be in the mix once again.

Situated in West Yorkshire, racing first took place in 1648 and remains Flat only. Traditionally the afternoon fixtures didn’t begin until 2.45pm so that miners at the adjacent colliery could finish the morning shift in time to go racing. But in 2002 the colliery shut down so this is no longer the case.
Course: The emphasis is very much on stamina for our tips here as the two mile circuit has a steep final three furlongs which is stiff and takes plenty of getting.
Draw Bias: No major bias to consider, however if our tips are drawn near the rail and are fast starters, this can be an advantage particularly over shorter distances.
