The price could be huge!! Former Derby runner runs in Punchestown maiden hurdle

Sandown Park

Trainer Emmet Mullins is a very shrewd operator and does well with his new recruits to the yard. He has a very interesting runner at Punchestown on Saturday, running in the Ladbrokes Home Of The Odds Boost Maiden Hurdle (3.00).

Before we move on to his runner, we will talk about Mullins’ credentials. The Shunter has been a major success story for the stable in recent months and proves he is a top quality trainer given the right ammunition.

That horse had not won in 18 starts when he moved to the Mullins yard. He has since gone on to win five times over both hurdles and fences. One of those victories came at the Cheltenham Festival in the Paddy Power Plate.

He then went on to Aintree and finished second in a Grade 1, so what an improvement that has been.

Sights lowers for former Derby horse

Sevenna Star, formerly trained by John Gosden in Britain, will have his third start for the Mullins camp on Saturday. This was a high-class flat horse who won a Group 3 at Sandown and ran in the 2018 Derby.

He clearly has not trained on since then but it has to be interesting that he is persevered with. Now connections have found a very weak maiden hurdle for him and he could be poised to strike.

This horse hates quick ground so it is easy to make an excuse for his first two starts for Mullins. He was brought down at the first on stable debut and was down the field at Clonmel three days later, both on good ground.

Both of his wins have come when the mud was flying and with soft forecast on Saturday, he could be lined up to strike. If they get him back anywhere near his former self, he should blow this field apart.
