There’s plenty going on across the day on Saturday and the ITV action is provided by Newcastle and York, with eight races being televised live. Here are some potentially overpriced outsiders and three horses with proven course records, who could have an advantage. Shrewd operator Tony Martin sends three runners over to Newcastle as well and they need to be carefully considered. There’s a Group 3 on the card at Newcastle and Clive Cox’s Diligent Harry is a three-time course and distance winner, with just five previous track starts to his name. The eight-year-old landed this very race last year and you can see why he’s popular in the betting once again.
Never So Brave was very progressive last season, although he has admittedly been a bit below-par so far this term. He landed the Group 1 City Of York Stakes over course and distance last season and a repeat performance would make the five-year-old very tough to beat here.
William Haggas’ Power Fizz is unbeaten in two starts at Newcastle and that streak is expected to continue. He’s up 7lb for winning well here on seasonal debut but there should be more to come.
Sujet (18/1, bet365) was narrowly denied when second over 7f at Chester in May and he should be very competitive off just a 1lb higher mark here. Both of his previous successes have come over a mile or further so the step back up in trip is likely to suit the four-year-old.
Rotokura Belle (16/1, bet365) has had a productive season so far, already landing a couple of wins, and the most recent of those came over course and distance last time out. More will be needed from her in this sort of grade but she’s clearly going the right way.
Alan King had a winner at Royal Ascot last week and don’t be surprised if Blazeon Five (22/1, bet365) lands him another decent prize in the £150,000 Northumberland Plate. He has a good record on the all-weather and is capable of making his presence felt off a mark of 92.
Alphonse Le Grande has the benefit of Sam Coen’s 5lb claim in the Northumberland Vase and the seven-year-old landed the Cesarewitch at Newmarket two years ago. He clearly has the ability and the stamina but has been out of form. Day Trader runs in the same race but is hard to fancy on form.
Zanndabad often threatens to land a decent prize and he looks potentially well treated on the form of his third in the 2024 Chester Cup, which came off a 2lb higher mark.
