York Flat Course

Tips for York Races

Also known as the ‘Knavesmire’, it’s one of the most popular racecourses in the country. It hosts high quality flat meetings from May through to October with the Dante Festival in the opening month and the Ebor Festival the main highlight in August. The big handicap of the season, The Ebor, is the richest handicap in Europe and will be worth a staggering £1 million in 2019. We have tips for all the big races at York.

Course: Generally a very fair track with few hard luck stories, it’s left-handed and flat. With a long straight and sweeping turns, it’s ideal for galloping types but it suits all kinds of horses in reality. There is a straight course for 5 and 6 furlong races.

Draw Bias: There is no great draw bias for our tips to consider, but in sprint handicaps there can be a lot of runners and it’s better to be where the pace is situated. So identifying front runners is advantageous. Over a mile it is favourable to be drawn in the lower numbers near the rail on the long bend.

Feature Meetings

York hosts many big days in the flat racing calendar. The Dante Festival has key trials for the Oaks and Derby. The Ebor Festival is the highlight with 3 Group 1’s. Plus the John Smith’s Handicap is another big day of action in July.

Dante Festival Days

  • Wednesday: Musidora Day featuring the Duke Of York Stakes and Musidora Stakes
  • Thursday: Dante Day featuring the Dante Stakes and Middleton Stakes
  • Friday: Yorkshire Cup Day where the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup is the highlight

Ebor Meeting Days

  • Wednesday: Juddmonte International Day
  • Thursday: Ladies Day featuring the Yorkshire Oaks
  • Friday: Nunthorpe Day featuring the Nunthorpe Stakes and the Gimcrack Stakes
  • Saturday: Ebor Day featuring the main event, the Ebor Handicap
