Racing on Wednesday: Balding & Keane at Sandown and long distance travellers
Andrew Balding and Colin Keane have an eye-catching strike-rate together at Sandown so it could be significant that they join forces on Wednesday. Lambourn-based trainer Nick Schofield sends two runners on the 678-mile round trip to Kelso and we’ve also picked out an ante-post tip for Saturday’s Ayr Gold Cup. Nick Schofield at Kelso
Kelso is a long way to go for Nick Schofield so we’ve assessed the chances of his representatives there on Wednesday and both runners can go close. Schofield’s only previous runner at the track was a winner.
Handmedownastar landed an Irish point at the second time of asking and ran a nice race to finish second in a Newton Abbot maiden in April, before going one better in good style at Fontwell. Things didn’t go to plan on handicap debut at Cartmel last time out but he’s clearly better than that.
Limerick Leader has been in fine form in the last couple of weeks and he was a comfortable winner at Bangor earlier this month. Following up with a 10-length success at Sedgefield last time out, a similar effort could be enough here, despite carrying a 5lb penalty.
Balding and Keane at Sandown
Andrew Balding and Colin Keane have a 75 per cent strike-rate when combining at Sandown and they will be joining forces with two runners on Wednesday. Pacific Mission was only a length behind the winner when second in a Haydock Listed contest last month and has an each-way chance.
Debutant Caldo has a fairly smart pedigree and the son of Nathaniel runs in the juvenile maiden over a mile. He’s the sort of horse you want to keep an eye on and don’t rule out victory here.
Ante-post Ayr Gold Cup tip
Flash Harry (20/1, bet365) got back on track with victory at Goodwood last month and Clive Cox’s four-year-old carries a 5lb penalty for that success. We haven’t seen the best of him so far this season and this valuable race provides an excellent opportunity for him to put his best foot forward.
