It’s Day 1 of the Punchestown Festival on Tuesday and there are eight races to look forward to, including three Grade 1s. The highlight of the day is the William Hill Champion Chase and it should be a fascinating day.

Party Central was useful in bumpers and has confirmed that promise since switching to hurdles. A four-time winner over timber, she has always left the impression that we haven’t quite seen the best of her as of yet. It was a fair effort when fourth behind stablemate Magic Tricks at Down Royal in November and she hasn’t been seen since. This means she’ll be a good deal fresher than most of her rivals and you wouldn’t want to rule out a big run from Gordon Elliott’s eight-year-old.
Fil Dor finished second in his first couple of starts this season over trips at around two miles and things haven’t gone to plan in two subsequent starts over longer trips. Dropping him back in distance is the right move and we should see a much better performance this time around. He hasn’t fully fulfilled the potential he showed as a juvenile but he’s capable of making his present felt at this level.
Sharjah is probably one of the oldest novice chasers around at the grand old age of 11. Willie Mullins’ gelding saw the trip out well when upped to three miles at Ayr last time out and he may have snuck under the radar. Rated 165 over hurdles at the peak of his powers, if producing an effort somewhere near that level here he’ll surely be bang in the mix.
