Nassau Stakes Runners and Riders

Nazeef

John Gosden’s budding star has won all six of her starts since a promising debut. She took the step up to Group 1 company in her stride when toughing it out to the win the Falmouth. Given what we’ve seen thus far, stepping up to the ten-furlong distance should suit, but she needs another career-best in her toughest task yet.

Fancy Blue

Unbeaten in two starts for Aidan O’Brien and although second on debut for Donnacha O’Brien, she enjoyed classic success in the Prix de Diane at Chantilly on her latest start. That was her first run over the ten-furlong distance and she’s completely unexposed. Ryan Moore takes over in the saddle and she has obvious claims with further improvement likely.

Magic Wand

Has been aimed at Group 1 company for the majority of her career and has stood as a very good yardstick. Despite many attempts, she has broken through at the top-level just once. She did return with a runaway Group 2 success at the Curragh and was far from disgraced in the Eclipse subsequently. Has a tendency to be the bridesmaid but huge chance on her best form.

Deirdre

Caused a 20/1 surprise when landing this race twelve months ago, placed in the Champion Stakes at Ascot subsequently. Ran better than the bare result in the Eclipse on return and difficult to discount her chances given last year’s success. Mainly consistent and perhaps doesn’t quite get the credit she deserves given her best form.

Nassau Stakes Tip

Fancy Blue

Winning three of her four starts thus far, Fancy Blue relished the step up to ten furlongs when toughing it out to win the Prix de Diane at Chantilly earlier this month. She’s completely unexposed and plenty of improvement can be expected on her second attempt of the distance. She hit the line bravely at Chantilly after battling back and is set for a sizeable step forward once again.

Receiving weight from all her main rivals and gaining the services of Ryan Moore, she should improve past her elders to secure a second victory at the top table.

Nassau Stakes Stats and Trends

  • 8 of the last 12 winners were aged 3
  • 8 of the last 12 winners had previously won a Group 1
  • 7 of the last 12 winners had at least one win over 1m 2f
  • 5 of the last 12 winners were sent off favourite

Three-year-olds have a great record in the race, which gives a boost to the claims of Fancy Blue. She fits the majority of the trends, with her only downside being the fact she’s not the favourite. Conversely, Nazeef falls short on the trends. Aged four, she does have a previous Group 1 victory, but she’s yet to run over ten furlongs.
