Lingfield Derby & Oaks Trials: Tips, Runners & Odds

Lingfield Racecourse

The Lingfield card on Friday is a fascinating one with their Derby and Oaks Trials. Anthony Van Dyck and Anapurna won them last year, both following up at Epsom in the classics themselves. The downhill run for home at Lingfield is similar to Epsom so these races are worth watching closely.

Lingfield Derby Trial Runners

Berkshire Rocco was behind the Oaks Trial favourite (Miss Yoda) when last seen. That was a big step forward on his previous form, Whether he can repeat it on now returned to a much quicker surface is his question to answer.

Charlie Fellowes looks to have a decent type on his hands with King Carney. He showed an excellent attitude to make all at Pontefract in October. He appeared to relish the soft ground that day but his breeding suggests firmer turf shouldn’t be a concern.

Bjorn Nielsen is in for a busy afternoon. He has English King here before Stradivarius makes his return twenty minutes later in the Coronation Cup. He should be well suited to the step-up in trip on fast turf, with a super pedigree to boot.

Lingfield Derby Trial Odds

A very tight-knit market with Berkshire Rocco, King Carney, and English King all separated by a point or less, generally in the 3/1-4/1 range.

Our Lingfield Derby Trial racecard has all the runners, odds, and key information you need.

Lingfield Derby Trial Tips

English King showed plenty of promise last year over trips that were always going to be short of his best. Strong at the line when winning over ten furlongs at Newcastle, the second and third have won since to frank the form. A half-brother to a Group 2 winner as well as the dam of Magic Wand, he should excel over this new trip.

Lingfield Oaks Trial Runners

John Gosden and Ralph Beckett have won this race five times between them in the last decade. Both have live chances once more in 2020, Gosden with Miss Yoda. Runner-up in the Zetland Stakes when last seen, stamina looks her strength. Much faster ground is an unknown and she wasn’t the biggest juvenile.

Beckett is represented by Heart Reef who was bogged down on heavy ground to close out her two-year-old campaign. This trip and quicker ground should show her in a far better light.

Anastarsia – who also represents Gosden – found the Fillies’ Mile too tough in the autumn. She looks the type to improve as she matures so needs each way consideration on her return to action.

Lingfield Oaks Trial Odds

Miss Yoda heads the market for John Gosden at 11/8. It’s 11/2 the field behind her with Lake Lucerne, West End Girl, Heart Reef, and Anastarsia all in the mix for the places according to the market.

Lingfield Oaks Trial Tips

We’re taking on the favourite here with Heart Reef. Her yard won this in both 2013 and 2014, with her runs last year (which displayed plenty of promise) coming on soft ground. On her pedigree, she should appreciate this quicker surface much more. Her dam is a half-sister to the mighty Danedream so this new trip looks a huge plus.
