Guide to Saturday’s ITV Racing

Midnight Shadow wins the 2019 Relkeel Hurdle at Cheltenham

The final day of racing at Prestbury Park before the Cheltenham Festival is on our ITV screens in what will be a classy and informative afternoon of action in Gloucester. Cheltenham Trials Day sees a Grade 3 Handicap before 3 Grade 2’s on the channel where the extremely competitive Cleeve Hurdle looks set to unveil a major Stayers’ Hurdle contender. There are also three contests from Doncaster on ITV with another couple of Grade 2’s and a Listed Chase where Ladbrokes Trophy third Dingo Dollar returns. Our ITV Racing Tips are live!

Competitive Cleeve to make Stayers’ water clearer

Nothing has yet to emerge from the British team to challenge reigning champion Penhill in the Stayers’ Hurdle market, but that could all change in today’s Cleeve Hurdle. Grade 1 winning novice Black Op returns to the smaller obstacles following a couple of blunder-filled runs over fences and should be far more at home. He was high class last season and was seeing out two and a half miles strongly so this step up to three miles should suit him. Paisley Park provided Emma Lavelle and Aidan Coleman with their first Grade 1 success in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot last month. He has relished the three mile test on his previous two outings and is a horse firmly on the upgrade. Midnight Shadow was an impressive winner of the Relkeel Hurdle at Cheltenham on New Years Day and tackles three miles for the first time here. He’s not short of pace but stayed on well up the hill last time, if he sees out the trip he could be the answer in a wide open renewal.

Frodon and Frost team up again in the Cotswold

Bryony Frost and Frodon are no strangers to the winners enclosure on a Saturday afternoon and there is every chance they will be there again today. The seven-year-old is now rated 169 after a win here last time and despite conceding weight all round, is clear on the figures. He loves the track and way he has been seeing out his races, he should be ready for this step up to three miles now. Elegant Escape was a valiant winner of the Welsh Grand National last time, but there is a doubt whether this contest on what will be fairly speed-favouring ground conditions, will be a stiff enough test for him. His old rival Terrefort returns to the track following a poor reappearance from which he picked up a small injury and if handling this quicker surface, could see him kick on from his novice campaign. 2017 Gold Cup second Minella Rocco makes his first appearance since February last year, he has ground conditions in his favour so it’ll be interesting to see how he gets on.
