Guide to Saturday’s ITV Racing

Altior pings a fence at Sandown

Yet another spectacular Saturday on ITV4 with a pair of Grade 1’s at Sandown highlighting the day. Only four go to post in the Tingle Creek, but what it lacks for in quantity it more than makes up for in quality. A Listed Handicap Hurdle featuring Apple’s Shakira and the London National make up the four races from the Esher track on terrestrial television. Another four contests come from Aintree where Don Poli returns in the Becher Chase, a small field for the Grade 2 Many Clouds Chase as well as a Listed Juvenile Fillies Hurdle and the Grand Sefton which is the second race of the day over the unique Grand National fences. Fantastic Four in the Tingle Creek

I think we all wanted to see Altior have a proper race first time up rather than turning up in a contest at 1/6, and boy has he got one. Nicky Henderson’s superstar, who remains unbeaten over obstacles, has three worthy adversary’s to take care of on his seasonal reappearance. Un De Sceaux hasn’t lost when tackling two miles on soft ground and getting those conditions once again here, Altior has possibly one of, if not the, most difficult tasks he’s faced. Sceau Royal already looks a better chaser than hurdler and even though on paper his beating of Simply Ned last time needs improving upon, he did it well. Plus having won the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase on this card last year, we know he goes well here. Saint Calvados looked a tremendously exciting prospect when winning his first three starts for Harry Whittington last season before going off way too hard in the Arkle, resulting in a poor run. He came back with a comfortable Grade 3 win in Ireland last month and very much deserves his place in this quality field.

Lalor aims to bolster Arkle claims

Having finished last season with a first win over obstacles in the Grade 1 Top Novices’ Hurdle at the Aintree Festival, Lalor wasted no time in getting off the mark over fences. He produced an extremely striking debut over the larger obstacles when winning the Grade 2 Arkle Trial at Cheltenham’s November Meeting by seven lengths, looking better the further he went. It’s very different ground conditions today though which could see Dynamite Dollars reverse the form, a return to a right-handed track should always play to his strengths given how impressive he was at Market Rasen on chasing debut. Pingshou was a smart hurdler, winning a Grade 1 and is entitled to be better than last time which was his first run for 572 days. Diakali is three from three over fences and his bold, front running style has paid dividends so far. Highway One O One and Ornua complete the field for what should be an informative contest.
