Guide to Saturday’s ITV Racing

Buveur D'Air wins the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle

Six brilliant races on the main ITV channel this afternoon from Newbury and Newcastle. Only thirteen runners go to post for the Ladbrokes Trophy this year, but it’s a very competitive field nonetheless. Three other handicaps make up the action from Newbury along with the Listed Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle, who also host the big clash of the day as Buveur D’Air, Samcro and Summerville Boy face off in the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle. All our ITV Racing tips are live!

Clash of the titans in the Fighting Fifth

Reigning Champion Hurdler Buveur D’Air won’t be sent off at odds of 1/6 like he was in this race last year, as on paper his task is far more difficult. Samcro has been the subject of a tremendous amount of hype since his career began and he was a facile winner of the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. When competing over two miles on his seasonal reappearance he was beaten by Bedrock, leaving doubts as to whether he has the pace for the minimum trip at the highest level. Summerville Boy won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle despite making a number of jumping errors, highlighting is engine and ability. The two young pretenders need to step up their game to beat the exceptional Buveur D’Air, but it’s bound to be an informative and exciting renewal.

Patrick, Lacey and Johnson seeking Ladbrokes Trophy

Richard Johnson will be aiming to make it two Ladbrokes Trophy’s from the past three runnings on Thomas Patrick having won the race in 2016 aboard Native River. Tom Lacey’s horse ran a brilliant prep race for this contest when losing out just half a length to Elegant Escape and meets that rival on five pound better terms. That looks a key piece of form with that pair heading the market. But with classy sorts such as Black Corton, American and Ms Parfois in the mix, it is a competitive affair. Beware The Bear is a fascinating contender for Nicky Henderson following wind surgery and wearing cheekpieces for the first time, only three pounds higher than his taking Rehearsal Chase win at this time last year.
