Guide To Saturday’s Racing 28th July 2018

Royal Ascot 2017 day 1

This Saturday of the year is always a special one, with Ascot hosting one of its best cards of the season. It’s headlined by the 2018 renewal of the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes, a Group 1 contest that always throws up a classy winner, with Enable taking this contest on the way to the Arc twelve months ago. Our King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes tips can be found alongside our ITV Racing tips, with York joining Ascot to fill the terrestrial coverage. With eight meetings to sink our teeth into, it’s a bumper day of action to get excited about.

Cracksman still in, but was there another rain?

The 2018 renewal of the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a fascinating prospect, not least due to the possible deflection by the still declared (as of 8:30am) Cracksman. Last year’s extremely impressive Champion Stakes winner is a doubt with the ground still Good to Firm after 2mm of rain overnight. With no more forecast today, he has plenty to prove after two very laboured runs the last twice, including at this venue over shorter on today’s ground. Poet’s Word swept by him to win the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot and he’ll be hoping to confirm placings, with the young pretender Crystal Ocean looking to dine at the top table for the first time.

Elarqam looking to get back on the straight and narrow

A winner of both his juvenile starts, Frankel’s son Elarqam was a good fourth in the 2000 Guineas on return prior to a disappointing run in the Irish equivalent a month later. Firmer ground is a viable excuse for that run though and with York going ‘soft’ after overnight rain, he can have no excuses today. He may struggle to hold back the progressive Forest Ranger, however, who has won both a Group 3 and a Group 2 this term. He also was inconvenienced by the ground on his latest start in the Coral-Eclipse and now that he’s dropped in grade, he’s one to take very seriously.
