Guide to Friday’s ITV Racing

Newmarket Racecourse

With the flat season starting to draw to a close, we’re treated to some brilliant action at Newmarket, with potential Guineas and Derby clues aplenty in what promises to be two days of exceptional racing at the Future Champions’ Festival. The first day focuses on the fillies, with the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile headling the day’s action. Aidan O’Brien holds the favourite, but there are plenty of very useful British trained horses who can lay down a fight to keep the trophy in this country. The four races at Newmarket today are joined by York, who have several competitive handicap contests for us to get stuck into. Our ITV Racing tips can be found on site now, as we dig into the action!

Gosden looks for fifth Fillies’ Mile

The Fillies’ Mile always gives us some brilliant pointers towards the 1000 Guineas and this year’s contest looks to be no exception. With plenty of big connections represented, this year’s contests promises to be a thriller. Aidan O’Brien holds the favourite in the form of Hermosa, who landed a Group 3 impressively at Naas two weeks ago. She’s progressive and needs respecting, but John Gosden’s Shambolic is the one who catches the eye. She’s not won either of her races by a wide margin, but she’s shown a good attitude on both occasions and battled on tenaciously to land the spoils. Given her extremely taking pedigree, she should continue to improve for further racing and could easily improve sufficiently to land this contest.

Limato looking to prove he’s up for a second Challenge

This time last year, Limato finished his year on a high when landing this contest in impressive fashion. He’d run well for the majority of 2017, but just couldn’t quite breakthrough again at the top level, and that is where this year differs. He’d been having a miserable 2018 prior to taking a drop into Listed grade, winning two races at this level in quick session. He was made to work pretty hard to get on top of a 103 rated rival at York last month and despite being very high class on his day, he steps back up in grade needing a return to near his best to beat horses like D’Bai. Charlie Appleby’s charge is a stalwart at group level and arrives here on the back of a good second at this level behind a horse who has followed up since, so has obvious claims for the “Boys in Blue”.
