We’re without a Group 1 at Glorious Goodwood on Friday, but that doesn’t mean there is a lack of quality on offer. The feature contest is the Goodwood King George, a five-furlong sprint. Post time for the 2020 renewal is 3.15pm on Friday 31st July. It will be broadcast on both the ITV main channel and Racing TV.
The last three renewals of the King George Stakes has gone the way of Battaash and the most successful horse in the history of the race looks for further success. He’s a warm-order to do so, but there are plenty of interesting challengers who won’t let him have an easy time of things.

A quirky commodity earlier in his career, Charlie Hills’ stable-star has become far more professional in recent seasons and decimated the King’s Stand field at Royal Ascot on return. A three-time Group 1 winner who has won the last three renewals of this race, he’s the one they all have to beat. He’s eleven pounds clear on ratings, such is the task his rivals are facing.
Course and distance Group 3 winner last July who was no match for Battaash in the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot, where she had the advantage of race fitness. Only second in a Group 3 at Sandown on her most recent outing and that doesn’t bode well back at this level against even tougher opposition.
Progressive last season and broke through at Group 1 level when scoring at Longchamp in the Prix de l’Abbaye. Disappointing on return at Royal Ascot behind Battaash but likely needed the run. Needs a career-best to threaten that rival but could feasibly improve further this term.
French raider who finished last in the Prix de l’Abbaye behind Glass Slippers in October. Has improved this season, and posted a career-best to win a Listed contest at Chantilly last time. Plenty more to find in this field but recent improvement is encouraging.
Battaash
Hard to oppose Battaash here, winner of this race for the last three years. On his day, he’s one of the best pure sprinters seen in recent years with this sharp track really suiting his style. His three wins is already a race record and he should be more than capable of extending his run of dominance.
Battaash is the short-priced favourite and he’s the one to follow on the trends too. Winning the last three renewals, he’s the highest-rated and a multiple Group 1 winner. He has plenty of Goodwood experience to call upon.
