We have a massive treat in store for us at York on Wednesday, as it’s Day 1 of the Ebor Festival. The first five races will be live on ITV so we’ve selected some outsiders to consider backing. Aidan O’Brien sends over a strong team so we’ve put his best chances into a treble and there’s a key stat involving William Buick. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Aidan O’Brien is always worth following but he has a strong team to go to war with at York on Thursday, so we’ve combined his three Ryan Moore-ridden runners into a treble.
Haffner (7/4, bet365) is a promising son of Justify and he appreciated the step up to 7f when getting off the mark in a Newmarket maiden. Second in the Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last time out, he won’t need to improve much on that performance in order to go one better here.
Christmas Day (5/2, bet365) is the pick of O’Brien’s representatives in the Great Voltigeur Stakes and he got the better of Maltese Cross when winning the Derby at Epsom in June. He found only a rejuvenated Benvenuto Cellini too good in the Irish Derby and looks like the one to beat.
Constitution River (7/4, bet365) could be pretty special and this is a good chance to prove it. A very impressive winner of the Eclipse last time out, the form has been boosted since and there could be more to come from the son of Wootton Bassett. Ombudsman will be a tough nut to crack however.
Leading jockey William Buick has a 70 per cent strike-rate when combining with John & Thady Gosden at York and they join forces with two horses on Wednesday.
Ombudsman is the horse to beat in the big race of the day and he was a very impressive winner of the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot last time out.
Valedictory remains fairly lightly raced and he won a decent handicap at Newmarket’s July Festival on his penultimate start and is entitled to be in the mix, if producing a similar effort here.
Candy (33/1, bet365) hasn’t been in the best of form in two starts so far this season but the four-year-old is capable of much better. He won the Ayr Silver Cup last term and is capable of making the frame.
In The Breeze (25/1, bet365) is 2/3 so far this term and was particularly impressive when landing a Goodwood handicap by five lengths last time out and could make his presence felt once again.
