Claiming Jockeys And The Lanzarote Hurdle – 11/1 & 20/1 Chances!

William Henry wins the 2018 Lanzarote Hurdle

Whether it be over hurdles, fences, or even on the flat, in competitive handicaps, every pound counts.

It is perhaps no surprise, therefore, that in these valuable handicaps, booking the best conditional rider is often the first thought on the minds of many connections.

A race that has been synonymous with claiming riders in recent years has been the Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton, with five of the last six winners being ridden by a jockey claiming weight – despite claiming jockeys only riding just over 30% of the total runners.

In short, backing every claiming rider in the Lanzarote – to a £1 stake – in the last six renewals would have produced a profit of £22.25, whilst there have also been placed horses during that same time period at odds of 25/1, 7/1 and 16/1.

Lanzarote Hurdle 2020

Saturday’s renewal of the Lanzarote sees a field of fourteen currently set to go to post, with two of those runners set to be ridden by a claimer – Theinval (Connor Brace – 3lbs) & Burrows Park (Miss Lucy Turner – 7lbs).

Here, we have delved deeper into the chances of those two entries, assessing whether or not they can continue the fine record of claiming jockeys in the Lanzarote Hurdle – read our views below.

Burrows Park – Miss Lucy Turner (7)

Burrows Park provided trainer Venetia Williams with a winner at her local track when landing a handicap hurdle at Hereford last month.

Miss Lucy Turner rode the eight-year-old to victory that day, and she has now been aboard for three of the gelding’s four UK wins.

He runs off a five pounds higher mark today, but the extra yardage on offer will suit, and his stable has a good recent record in this event having taken the 2016 renewal with Yala Enki – who had a claimer aboard.

Theinval – Connor Brace (3)

Better known as a chaser, Theinval reverts to timber having failed to complete in both his starts so far this campaign.

The ten-year-old hasn’t been seen in this sphere since April 2016, but he has slipped to a very workable mark on the pick of his form, and trainer Nicky Henderson has won the Lanzarote on three occasions (Non So – 2003, Oscara Dara – 2013 & William Henry – 2018)

Currently second behind Jonjo O’Neill Jr in the Conditional Jump Jockeys Championship, Connor Brace has previous when teaming up with Nicky Henderson in these competitive handicap hurdles, having ridden the mare Verdana Blue to victory in last season’s Scottish Champion Hurdle.
