Top jockey bids for fifth Sandringham win on 28-1 chance

Friday at Royal Ascot is headlined by a pair of Group 1 races, the Commonwealth Cup and the Coronation Stakes. The former sees Campanelle attempt to go back to back at the Royal Meeting for Wesley Ward, while 1000 Guineas winner Mother Earth is the star attraction in the latter.

We’ll have Royal Ascot tips for all of the races on day three, but one of the handicaps is the focus of this piece. One of the weighing rooms most opinion-dividing stars, Jamie Spencer, has a superb record in the Sandringham. He’s won in on four occasions, most recently on Agrotera in 2018 for Ed Walker.

His mount for this year’s renewal is a big price at 28-1 and commands plenty of respect, find out all the details below!

5.00 Ascot – Sandringham Stakes (Handicap)

Spencer’s partner in 2021 is Charlie Hills’ Prado, and she’s a very interesting candidate for the race. Three of her runs thus far came as a juvenile, winning her debut at Salisbury in July before a pair of group assignments.

Second to a runaway winner a Goodwood Group 3, she then hung right when unable to challenge in the Group 2 May Hill at Doncaster, her final two-year-old start. Making her seasonal reappearance over the round mile at Ascot back in April, she was always likely to need the run, dwelling at the start and making gains when the bird had already flown.

A strong test over the mile should play to all her strengths, as she loves to come with one sustained charge in the closing stages. It’s also where Spencer excels, as he’s a master of weaving his way through on hold-up horses.

A switch to the straight course is another positive to her chances and she’s totally unexposed after just four racecourse visits. She’s ground versatile too, so any rain won’t dampen her spirits either.

At odds of 28-1, she’s a very interesting each-way candidate. She’ll almost certainly be making ground in the closing stages and with an ice-cool Spencer aboard, he’s likely to time her run to perfection.
