8.25pm Newmarket Tips & Betting Preview 12/05/2016

IN SUMMARY: Golden Stunner gave a very good account when second in a C&D maiden at the Craven meeting but is now a non runner. There will be more opportunities for Ralph Beckett’s filly in maidens confined to her own sex and her latest piece of form was very well advertised when the winner (Swiss Range) impressed in a Listed event this month. FOUR ON EIGHT (11/2) looks the type to progress from his 2yo form and, with Ryan Moore booked, gets the nod. Oh This Is Us looked a horse to follow when winning his handicap debut in good style on Polytrack last month and is a player if suited by this switch to turf. Roger Varian’s Doncaster maiden winner Philadelphia also makes the shortlist.

1 Edification – Came good in Salisbury nursery (1m, good) in August, his sixth start, and also ran well when second at Yarmouth (1m, good to firm) the following month; went up 5lb for more recent run, though, and that could leave him vulnerable on return from 240-day absence.

2 Salvo – Created good impression when making winning debut over 6f on the July course here last summer but was soundly beaten in a Group 3 and a valuable nursery on other two 2yo starts; dropped in class and upped in trip for seasonal debut; others more persuasive.

3 Four On Eight – Won his maiden at Windsor (8.3f, good) in September and was very respectable third on nursery debut here (1m1f, good to soft) the following month; could easily have more to offer this season and Ryan Moore booked today; one to consider.

4 Gold Trade – Placed on all four 2yo starts but fluffed what looked a good opportunity when runner-up in Chelmsford maiden (1m, AW) on latest outing in October; doesn’t look obviously well treated ahead of seasonal/handicap debut and probably needs to have made some progress over the winter.

5 Al Hamd – Delivered on 2yo promise when clearcut winner of run-of-the-mill Kempton maiden (1m, AW) in March; last of seven when favourite for last month’s handicap debut at Beverley but he lost ground at the start and the ground was soft; can be given another chance.

6 Dutch Gallery – Made winning debut in 6f maiden on the July course here last summer; not seen since then and his sprinting pedigree raises doubts about the suitability of today’s trip, but he has obvious potential to improve and and can’t be ruled out.

7 Philadelphia – Displayed improvement to win Doncaster maiden (7f, soft) last month, his third start; encounters faster ground here and may need to settle better to see out today’s longer trip, but first-time hood may help in that regard and it seems likely he can make progress.

8 Golden Stunner (non runner) – 0-5 in maidens but made pleasing seasonal reappearance when second of 14 over C&D (good to soft) at the Craven meeting; that form was boosted when the winner impressed in a Listed event this month; needs to be taken very seriously.

9 Mariee – Began career with two 7f AW wins in January and also ran with credit when second to a subsequent winner on turf debut at Brighton (1m, good) nine days ago; runs of the same mark here and probably won’ t be far away.

10 Zaina Rizeena – Pushed out to win Beverley maiden (7.5f, good) last summer, her second start; disappointed in Ayr novice event the following month and not seen since but remains unexposed; interesting to see how she fares on seasonal/handicap debut.

11 Oh This Is Us – Made smooth headway before quickening clear to make winning handicap debut at Chelmsford (1m, AW) last month; 7lb higher in a stronger race here and needs to prove he’s effective on turf but, given the style of that performance, is dangerous to ignore.

12 Cleverconversation – Outran 50/1 odds when third in C&D maiden in September (wore eyeshields) but was comfortably held when seventh in 1m1f nursery here the following month; hood the headgear of choice on seasonal debut; improvement required.

13 Midnight Macchiato – Ran poorly on nursery debut in the autumn but got back on track when staying-on third at Haydock (1m, good) last month; been nudged up 2lb for that, though, and contests a higher-grade race here, so needs to build on that performance.
