Why Enable won’t win a third Arc

Frankie Dettori and Enable after winning the 2019 Sandown Eclipse

Enable made it twelve wins from twelve on her final start on British soil when she landed a second Yorkshire Oaks. She is the superstar of her generation and the daughter of Nathaniel left Frankie Dettori and all of her fans with tears of joy on the walk to the winners enclosure.

But now she will travel to France in a bid to make history. The acid test is drawing ever-closer and the question remains; can she win a third Arc? The answer has to be no, through gritted teeth! We all know that she is a superstar and has had an unbelievable career but she has to produce a career-best to win this Arc, that is it in a nutshell.

The Challengers

Sottsass comfortably accounted for the French Guineas winner Persian King in the French Derby and his trainer Jean-Claude Rouget feels there is plenty more improvement to come. This boy could be anything and he will be getting four pounds from Enable thanks to the three year old allowance.

Enable’s chief danger will probably come in the shape of Japan who has progressed with each run this year and the Aidan O’Brien inmate looks a huge threat to the mare. Horses out the Derby have an atrocious record in the King Edward VII but he absolutely dotted up there after an eye-catching third in the Epsom Derby! Since then, he has landed two Group One’s and last time out beat the highest rated horse on the planet, Crystal Ocean. Enable will do well to give this improver four pounds and a beating.

Enable Was Lucky In 2018

Sea Of Class, undoubtedly would have beaten Enable in last year’s renewal if she did not have to come from Jupiter’s outer ring to try and win the race. The Haggas horse was so unlucky on the day due to the draw out in the car park but still very nearly won. Enable will have no hiding place this time around and with two of the world’s most talented three-year-olds in her face, I feel this is the race where her legacy will come to an end.

The bare facts are yes, Enable is a superstar. Yes, she has won in England, she has won two Arc’s and she has won at the Breeders Cup. But the reality is she has beaten two top class horses in her last five starts, Magical and Crystal Ocean. She knows how to beat them. It is extremely difficult to win three Arc’s, that is why it has never been done. The wonder-mare Treve tried, and failed. She was rated higher than Enable at her peak (Treve 130, Enable 128).

We all love Enable but taking everything into account, I think she is a shocking price for the Arc and in my opinion, will get beat. What will beat her? I am not sure, but everything points to Japan for me.
