We’ve got some excellent racing to look forward to across the day on Wednesday, including some Classic trials at Newmarket. Haydock also hosts some top National Hunt action, including the Grade 2 Silver Trophy Handicap Chase, in which Henry de Bromhead sends a runner over. Here are some of the key things to note over the afternoon and we’ve also put up a free ante-post Scottish Grand National tips. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Newmarket’s main event is the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes (3.35) there could be some Classic pointers on offer. It’s a recognised trial for the 1000 Guineas next month. Act Of Kindness heads the market, although she doesn’t have an entry for the Guineas. Perhaps an impressive victory will force connections to supplement her? Beautify and Inis Mor are 40/1 and 50/1 respectively for next month’s Classic.
Newmarket’s opening race is a competitive-looking 6f handicap and the Ruth Carr-trained Rousing Encore may have been unfairly overlooked. He ran well when second on his seasonal reappearance at Newcastle last time out and should step forward for that run. The six-year-old was beaten less than a length when third in a good race at Doncaster in November and should be competitive off this mark.
Charlie Appleby has been in fine form of late and is five from nine with his runners in Britain over the last fortnight, before Tuesday’s racing. He has three runners at Newmarket across the afternoon and that includes Poseidon’s Warrior in the Listed Fielden Stakes.
He absolutely bolted up in a Goodwood novice over this trip in October and he can progress this year. It’s also worth noting that Appleby has a 31 per cent strike-rate at the course in the last five seasons.
Isaac Newton won his maiden at Goodwood last summer and was far from disgraced when fourth in a Group 1 at Saint-Cloud in October. He probably has a bit to find at might need the run.
Beautify got off the mark in the Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes at the Curragh in June and comfortably got the better of the smart Lady Iman. There could be more to come from her this season.
Zurich represents Henry de Bromhead and he’s popular in the betting for the Silver Trophy Handicap Chase. Fifth at the Cheltenham Festival last time out, this race looks a lot easier.
Nicky Henderson has highlighted Saturday’s Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise Stakes and the Group 3 contest represents a major step up in class in his new venture. Two-time Group 2 winner Pride Of Arras looks could be the one to beat, but Convergent and Al Aasy are stablished performers too. Victory for Constitution Hill would open up many possibilities but it won’t come easily.
Ayr takes centre stage on Saturday and the Scottish Grand National is set to be a cracker. Tom Lacey could send Montregard and he is definitely one to watch if he lines up. The seven-year-old is a half-brother to Protektorat and he shapes as if a marathon trip could suit on decent ground. Lacey’s gelding won well at Ascot when last seen and a 4lb rise shouldn’t be too damaging to his chances.
