Thursday’s racing: Race of the day, Pontefract draw bias and a rare Balding runner at Ayr
There’s plenty happening on Thursday so we’ve selected three angles to consider. Here is a preview for Ayr‘s £35,000 Kilkerran Handicap, a couple of well drawn runners at Pontefract and Andrew Balding sends a runner up to Ayr for just the second time this season. Race of the day: Kilkerran Handicap
A field of 11 has been declared for this competitive-looking Class 2 over 1m2f and last time out winner Galyx will be popular in the betting. Jack Channon’s gelding wants the rain to come and was a comfortable victor when scoring in heavy ground at Beverley when last seen.
Financer also managed to win his most recent start and he won this very race off a higher mark two years ago. Don’t rule out a big run from Tim Easterby’s five-year-old. Impartiality deserves to get his head in front sooner rather than later, having finished second in each of his last four starts.
Wild Thoughts ran well at Doncaster last time out and Tiernan has been consistent of late, after winning a Hamilton novice three starts ago. Dain Ma Nut In is fully capable of running a big race off this sort of weight and he looks like an intriguing each-way player.
Go Low at Pontefract
The data suggests that horses with a low draw have a significant advantage at Pontefract, particularly over a mile and 1m2f. With that in mind, here are two horses with advantageous draws.
Billyb has a plum draw in stall one and he is well treated on the form of his win at Southwell in November. Now down to a 4lb lower mark, a return to winning ways could be on the agenda.
Dubai Venture is drawn in stall four and Tina Jackson’s five-year-old won at Pontefract off a 4lb lower mark in July. He has finished second in two starts since and should be in the mix once again.
Rare Andrew Balding runner at Ayr
Perfect Heir is set to be Andrew Balding’s second runner at Ayr this season and the two-year-old was fourth on debut at Kempton. You would imagine that he will need to take a significant step from that, having finished 10 lengths behind the winner, but he’s entitled to improve.
