William Buick and Oisin Murphy are two of the best jockeys around at the moment and Haydock has been a happy hunting ground for both so far this season. Their course records are exemplary so they are the ones to follow. Both head to the Lancashire track on Friday so we’ve combined four of the pair’s best chances into a Lucky 15 to follow across the card. Pole Star made his debut in a fair maiden at Chester earlier this month and wasn’t beaten too far, despite finish fourth of six. Charlie Johnston’s colt stepped forward to finish second by a narrow margin at Newmarket next time and that form probably makes him the one to beat. It’s unlikely that much improvement would be required but he’s entitled to progress again and Buick takes the ride.
Commanding Officer represents the bang in-form Charlie Appleby yard and is set to make his debut here. Buick’s mount has a fairly decent pedigree and it’s hard to oppose a stable that’s operating at strike-rate of 45 per cent in the last fortnight. Eight of Appleby’s 14 juvenile runners have won and it wouldn’t be a surprise if this horse adds to the tally.
Mister Winston has shown signs of progress in two starts this season and should be getting off the mark sooner or later. He bumped into an impressive winner when second at Chester recently and a rating of 84 suggests he’s one of the main contenders. The drop back in trip could help and Oisin Murphy takes the ride for Andrew Balding.
Best Adventure produced a smart performance to get off the mark when upped to 1m2f at Newmarket when last seen and the handicapper has responded with a 7lb rise. That will make life harder but he goes up in trip again and it’s quite possible that 1m4f will facilitate further progress. Murphy is set for the ride and he’s unlikely to be far away.
