‘The trainer is bullish’ – Doddie Weir’s 40-1 namesake primed for the Brocklesby 🏉

The Brocklesby Stakes is scheduled to take place at Doncaster on Saturday. A prestigious race, it’s the first juvenile race of the season on turf and it’s steeped in history. There could be one very special runner in the race this year and connections are confident ahead of the event.

Doddie’s Impact is named after the late great Doddie Weir, a legend of Scottish rugby who died from Motor Neurone Disease in November. Cross Channel Racing own the horse and they have teamed up with the charity My Name’5 Doddie. Connections are confident of a big run, despite the fact that he’s currently available at 40-1. ‘All the signs are pretty good’

A son of Pearl Secret, Doddie’s Impact was a relatively inexpensive purchase as a yearling, costing trainer Robyn Brisland just £6,000. The same connections finished third in the race last year with Jiffy Boy. Cross Channel’s racing director Karl Pearson said: “From day one, he was very forward, he’s very much like Jiffy.” At this stage of the season, you absolutely need a very forward juvenile to win this race and connections clearly believe they have just that.

The potential easy going should also be to the horse’s liking according to Pearson. He said: We want soft ground, so it’s coming in our favour. All the signs are pretty good.” Rain is expected in Doncaster on both Friday and Saturday and it should be all systems go.

‘Robyn’s fairly bullish’

Pearson has been picking up the positive vibes from Brisland it seems. He added: “Robyn thinks this fella is exactly the same mould, although he’s got a bit more body to him. I think Robyn’s fairly bullish about him so hopefully he can do himself justice and finish in the first half of the field.” Having purchased this colt as a yearling, no one would know him better.
