The Irish 2000 Guineas takes place at the Curragh on Saturday and Ireland’s first Classic of the season is shaping up to be a fascinating race. British trainers have won three of the last 10 renewals and they have a strong hand to play this year. With that in mind, we’ve assessed the chances of the main contenders and selected an outsider at 25/1 that appears to have been unfairly overlooked. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
John & Thady Gosden’s three-year-old was a very impressive winner of the Craven Stakes on seasonal debut and was strides away from following up in the Guineas. More positive tactics could be employed this time and he’s entitled to go close once again.
The thrice-raced Cosmic Year has made a very promising start to his career and won impressively at Sandown on debut last year. He followed up in a novice at Kempton on seasonal debut, where he was equally as impressive under a penalty. Listed success then followed and it’ll be interesting to see how far this colt can go.
Charlie Appleby’s colt has improved significantly at three and bolted up in a Listed contest at Meydan on seasonal debut. He came out on top in the 2000 Guineas when last seen and has every chance of completing the double, but is by no means a guaranteed runner.
Representing the Brian Meehan yard, Rashabar (25/1, SkyBet) won the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot last year and was narrowly denied in two Group 1s after that. Second in a Guineas trial on seasonal debut, he’s entitled to improve significantly for the run and his pedigree suggests the step up in trip will suit.
