Sunday racing: British raiders at the Curragh and Joseph O’Brien’s 14-runner assault
This Sunday is a quite one numerically speaking, with just three meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland, but there are some decent races to look forward to. There are two British raiders running at the Curragh, so we’ve assessed their chances and Joseph O’Brien has prepared a team of 14 runners for the €500,000 Irish Cesarewitch, plenty of which could run big races. British raiders at the Curragh
Soul Love has already launched a successful raid in Ireland this season and her last two starts came at Naas. Winning a Listed contest there on July, she showed a good attitude to score by half-a-length. She can’t be ruled out, having finished second in a Group 3 since, but this race does look a little harder.
Valiancy represents William Haggas and he was a winner over 1m5f at Hamilton on seasonal debut. He ran well in a 1m6f Royal Ascot handicap next time but failed to get home over an extended 2m4f at Goodwood when last seen. This trip will suit better and he’s capable of making his presence felt.
Joseph O’Brien goes big
It’s fair to say that Joseph O’Brien has targeted Sunday’s Irish Cesarewitch and he has assembled an unprecedented team of 14 runners for the 2m1f handicap. There are 30 runners in total and he should therefore have one or two runners making the frame, at the very least.
The lightly raced Sky Captain won a 1m4f maiden on debut for previous connections and we know he stays 1m6f, so it’s feasible that the extra three furlongs will be fine. He’s unexposed in handicaps.
Light Up The Dark is a Listed bumper winner, so the trip shouldn’t be a problem and she produced a much improved effort when second in a Killarney handicap last time out.
A Piece Of Heaven produced an excellent performance to win the Chester Cup in May and he should be more than capable of making his presence felt off a 3lb higher mark here.
Tennessee Stud is an interesting outsider and he makes his first start in a European handicap. The son of Wootton Bassett placed in the Derby as a three-year-old and is a Group 2 winner over 1m7f.
