Straight From The Trainer – Fontwell

Horse Trainer Nick Gifford

On Wednesday 9th May we head to Fontwell Park for our fourth sponsored meeting of the calendar year. Situated in Sussex this popular track has a unique mile long oval course round the outside that forms the hurdles track. It then has a mile figure of eight course in the middle where the chases are, these particular attributes are what tempts certain trainers to run their horses here.  myracing.com caught up with a few trainers with entries for the meeting and here’s what they had to say:

5.10pm – myracing.com Handicap Hurdle

Nick Gifford on Project Mars – “Been in the grip of the handicapper for some time. Ran very well last time and I’m sure one of these will fall his way sooner or later. We’ve swapped blinkers for a visor to see if we can eek out a bit more improvement. Ground, trip all okay and he should be very competitive.”

Chris Gordon on Howlongisafoot – “Rather lost his way of late, but on a lifetime low mark now. Will much prefer this ground to what he’s been running on. I’m expecting a far better show tomorrow and I’d be disappointed if he’s not in the first four.”

6.15pm – Novices’ Hurdle

Fergal O’Brien on Benechenko – “Very consistent, but we keep bumping into one with him. Will love the trip, but we wouldn’t want the ground any faster. Brodie gets on very well with him and takes a useful five pounds off.”

Anthony Honeyball on Dom Lami – “Proven on the ground, he’s won a point and a bumper on good ground so we’ve no worries on that score. He’s also won on the course and he’ll love the trip. He’d done very little wrong until last time when he was up against some battle-hardened handicappers and it was all a bit much for him. I’m very confident tomorrow.

We highlighted Anthony Honeyball as one of the trainers to follow in our Fontwell Track Stats article.

6.45pm – Follow @myracingtips On Twitter Maiden Hurdle

Nick Gifford on Swift Native – “She’s a very nervous mare and the plan is to keep running her so she gains more experience and gets used to performing at the racecourse. She’s definitely more of a long term project.

7.45pm – myracing.com For Free Bets & Free Tips Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

Chris Gordon on Ramore Will – “In great form and is working really well at home. Despite winning on soft ground the last twice, we’ve no concerns about the going, he’s won on fast ground before. I’m expecting another very big run.

8.15pm – myracing.com For Tips Every Day Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race

Nick Gifford on Black Lightning – “Ran great first time out at Plumpton. The last two times he’s run the race hasn’t been run to suit. They’ve gone a real crawl early and then quickened up and he’s a real stayer. He’ll be ridden very prominently tomorrow and we’ll make use of his stamina. He’s a 3 miler for the future.
