The Stars Are Out For Group 1 Action At Longchamp! + 8/1 Treble

After the final British Classic of the season from Doncaster in the form of the St Leger, attentions turn to a Group 1 card at Longchamp on Sunday. With plenty of British interest, including from the Oaks winner, it’s a card that really gets the heart racing! Group 2 Prix Foy (1.35pm)

A fascinating race is in prospect, with the Group 1 winner Waldgeist looking to return to winning ways for Andre Fabre. He’s run extremely well at Ascot on his last two outings, including a third in the King George where he pulled clear with Enable and Crystal Ocean. That form sets the standard in this race and makes him the one to beat.

That said, there will be a strong challenge from Japan’s Kiseki, who makes his European debut after some very strong front-running form back home. Second in a pair of Grade 1 races when last seen earlier in the year, he’s likely to make a bold bid from the front.

Group 1 Prix Vermeille (2.50pm)

This race features the return of Oaks winner Anapurna, who has won all three of her starts since a poor debut as a two-year-old. She’s been given a break since that Oaks success and now renews rivals with Pink Dogwood, who has been disappointing since that Oaks second, and Fleeting, who has done very little wrong in defeat at the top level. Of the three, it’s hard to get away from the Oaks winner, who has Oisin Murphy riding today.

That is because Frankie Dettori has jumped shipping, preferring the chances of John Gosden’s Star Catcher. She’s been a major improver since being upped to twelve furlongs, winning the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot over Fleeting prior to a Group 1 success at the Curragh over the same rival. She’s completely unexposed and further progress has to be expected.

All that said, the booking of Oisin Murphy doesn’t dampen the chances of Anapurna, who should still have far more to offer and arriving here fresh is likely to be a positive. If building on her Oaks victory, she’ll be difficult to beat.

Group 2 Prix Niel (3.25pm)

It’s difficult to get away from the chances of Jean-Claude Rouget’s Sottsass in this contest. Highly progressive in his career thus far, he landed his biggest success when taking the French Derby in impressive fashion back in June. That was over ten furlongs and he’s an exciting prospect, as he should be all the better for these extra two furlongs. He’s the one to beat, though Aidan O’Brien’s Mohawk won’t make things easy.

He’s kept some very good company in 2019 and hasn’t been disgraced, winning a Group 3 at Leopardstown two starts back. He was a long way behind Sottsass in the French Derby, however, and his inconsistent profile is a worry. That makes the case all the stronger for Sottsass.
