St Leger Festival Day 2: Outsiders, horses for courses and an Emmet Mullins runner
The St Leger Festival continues at Doncaster on Friday and we have another eight races to look forward and the first five will be live on ITV. Emmet Mullins has been in the news recently and he’s sending a very lightly raced runner over for the Doncaster Cup. We’ve also got some outsiders to follow, who could be overpriced, and picked out some runners with proven course records to consider. Emmet Mullins sends one to Doncaster
Emmet Mullins is sending a rare runner to Doncaster on Friday and the horse in question is set to line up in the day’s main event; the Doncaster Cup. With the recent news that Mullins is set to focus more on the Flat in the not too distant future, he will want to announce himself with a big winner.
Winday has only had four starts on the Flat so far and he was third behind subsequent Listed winner Endorsement in a 1m1f maiden at Tipperary last term. He got off the mark with a six-length success in a Ffos Las maiden over 1m4f last time out and it’ll be interesting to see how he gets on at this level.
Outsiders
Tokaido (14/1, Boylesports) has been on the go since March and this race tends to go the way of more precocious two-year-olds. That bodes well for Amy Murphy’s Prix Robert Pain-winning colt who is better than he managed to show at York last time out and deserves another chance.
Ascending (20/1, bet365) won over 2m4f at Royal Ascot last summer and he was a fair fourth in the Ebor last time out. Henry de Bromhead’s seven-year-old is capable of making his presence felt.
Green Sky (22/1, bet365) has done very well since joining Rod Millman this year and she progressed nicely to win three consecutive starts. She was a little keen in the early stages when third at Goodwood last time out but she can get even closer if settling better in the early stages.
Horses for courses
Beylerbeyi has a 50 per cent strike-rate here at Doncaster, winning two of his four starts, and also landed the Cesarewitch back in 2025. Ian Williams’ runner has an each-way shout.
Nochebuena won a course and distance novice on her penultimate start and she ran a cracker to finish second by a short head on handicap debut. There could be any amount of improvement to come.
