Shergar Cup 2016 Teams Announced

Shergar Cup 2016 Teams

It’s that time of year again – the Shergar Cup from Ascot. First run in it’s current form in 2000, there are 6 handicap races over varying distances, and each jockey rides in five races. Points are awarded for the first five places, and the highest scoring team wins.

Last year saw the Girls Team take a first success, with Sammy Jo Bell staring as the Silver Saddle winner with 42 of their 69 points. Their captain, Emma-Jayne Wilson, returns again this year, joined by promising apprentice Josephine Gordon and Hayley Turner. The latter has come out of retirement just to ride in this competition following a string of unfortunate injuries to high profile female jockeys, and she’ll be hoping they can defend their total.

The UK & Irish team is made up of three Shergar  Cup debutants, with captain Joe Fanning being joined by Martin Harley and Oisin Murphy. Harley won the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot on board Outback Traveller for Robert Cowell just 6 weeks ago, while Oisin Murphy will be looking forward to the Betfred Ebor next month which he won onboard Litigant last year.

The European team is made up of Frankie Dettori (captain), Pierre-Charles Boudout and Thierry Jarnet. Both top class French jockeys are making their Shergar Cup debuts, although plenty will recognise the latter for his rides on board Treve who he rode on 10 of her 13 starts, not least in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Finally, the Rest of the World team is headed up by Silvestre de Sousa, current Champion Jockey in Britain. He’s having another good season with 91 wins from his 551 runs in the UK with a 17% strike rate for well over £1,000,000 prize money, and he’ll have his eyes on winning the Silver Saddle for the first time. Gavin Lerena is one of the other two team members, making his first appearance on a UK racecourse following winning the International Jockey Championship in Hong Kong last year. South African, he has impressed internationally recently and is not to be underestimated. Alongside him will be Kenichi Ikezoe, who is also making his first appearance in the UK. He did the Japanese 1,000 Guineas and Oaks double onboard Sinhalite this season, and has won numerous Grade 1 races over the past 14 years.
