There are a whopping eight meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland on Saturday but we’re going to focus on the ITV action, which is provided by York, Sandown and Chester. Here are some potentially overpriced outsiders, horses with proven course records and an intriguing Irish raider at York. Sergeant Wilko (18/1, bet365) brings some rock-solid form to the table and the experienced five-year-old has won off higher marks than this in the past. It was a much improved effort when second by a narrow margin on his first try over 7f last time out and perhaps there’s more to come over this trip.
We probably haven’t seen the best of Hard Endeavor (20/1, bet365) just yet and he should be useful on the evidence of his six-length demolition job at Kempton in November. He needed the run badly at Newbury last month and a 3lb drop in the weights won’t do his chances any harm.
Ben Haslam’s Back To Me (50/1, bet365) looks thoroughly unexposed still and he was very impressive when scoring on stable debut at Southwell in April. The son of Magna Grecia wasn’t beaten far when second at Hamilton recently and further progress is anticipated in handicap company.
Brighton Boy was a winner on his only previous start at York and that bodes well for a big run here. That success came in a decent nursery in his two-year-old days and he has been in very good form recently. Tim Easterby’s gelding should be in the mix once again.
The experienced Al Qareem has won three of his six starts at York and that includes victory in this very race last year. Karl Burke’s gelding has already won this season and he looks like the one to beat once again.
Sticktoyourguns made the perfect start to his career when winning a course and distance maiden last summer and the third has provided a couple of significant boosts to the form. Owen Burrows’ colt makes his handicap debut here and a big run can’t be ruled out.
Johnny Murtagh sends the progressive Chicago Pope over for the very valuable sprint handicap and he won a maiden at Naas on his final start of last season. Returning to winning ways over the same course and distance next time, it would be dangerous not to consider the son of Starspangledbanner.
