3.40 – Murray Spelman Handicap Hurdle

Last year’s winner: Macnicholson 10/1c
Distance: 2m

2015 Preview: One of a massive five co-favourites, Macnicholson managed to defy his heavy burden of 11st 11lbs to head 11/1 chance Pivot Bridge just before the line. Another full field would see another highly competitive affair again this time around.

4.15 – Three.ie Handicap Chase

Last year’s winner: Mallowney 8/1
Distance: 2m

2015 Preview: Ned Buntline was the favourite for this event after taking second in last year’s Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival. Noel Meade’s charge could only take fourth. His participation this time around has been put into doubt after a late fall in Aintree’s Red Rum Handicap Chase. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that the seven-year-old may once again feature.

4.50 – Cross Country Steeplechase

Last year’s winner: Jacks Island 25/1
Distance: 4m 1f

2015 Preview: A full field of runners will take on Punchestown’s unusual Banks course in the second cross country race at the Festival. Longer than that on the opening day by over 1m, all entrants will have to tackle such obstacles as the Galway Doubles, the Laurel Hedges and the Risk of Thunder.

5.30 – World Series Hurdle

Last year’s winner: Jetson 20/1
Distance: 3m

2015 Preview: Hurricane Fly is set to go off the favourite for the World Series Hurdle despite this being the first time that the 11-year-old has ever attempted 3m. Jessica Harrington’s Jezki is another who will be tackling a new trip though he has youth on his side whilst Jetson could also defend his title for the 29-time Grade One winning handler.

6.05 – Punchestown Pavilion Handicap Hurdle

Last year’s winner: Off The Charts 20/1
Distance: 3m

2015 Preview: The late Dessie Hughes managed to seal first and fourth place in this race last year, also notable in that all of the first14 finishers had double figure odds. Could the Hughes family be  represented once agagin through his daughter Sandra, or will punters finally get the measure of the sort of horse it takes to win the Pavilion Handicap Hurdle?

6.40 – Ryanair Novice Chase

Last year’s winner: God’s Own 25/1
Distance: 2m

2015 Preview: Whilst either of Mullins’ star novices, Un De Sceaux and Vautour, could feasibly forego this race to instead feature in the Champion Chase, they both top the Ryanair Novice Chase market. Both are odds-on. Clarcam has already beaten Vautour this season and should feature in this event. Smashing is also available at single figure odds.

7.15 – Mares Novice Hurdle

Last year’s winner: Morga 5/1
Distance: 2m

2015 Preview: Willie Mullins’ Uranna proved herself to be a class mare when picking up Sandown’s Listed Jane Seymour Novices’ Hurdle and, whilst she is declared for a handful of races at Punchestown, could also feature prominently in this novice hurdle.

7.45 – Kildare Post INH Flat Race

Last year’s winner: High Stratos 14/1
Distance: 2m

2015 Preview: Keep your eye on those trackers for next season in this INH Flat race. Previous entrants that have gone on to secure significant graded races include Ted Veale, Buckers Bridge and Captain Cutter.

Punchestown Festival Day 3 Tips

All of our Punchestown Festival Day 3 tips are 100% researched! Should we ever use the term “Non Runner No Bet”, we mean that you will get your money back should your selection not appear in the race in which it has been backed. They might show in a different race or not appear at all due to drying ground or injury.

Whilst most bookmakers will offer “NRNB” terms, always make sure to check, especially if you are betting with a smaller bookie – or William Hill!

Punchestown Festival Day 3 2014

The opening race of the third day of last season’s Punchestown Festival could not have got any more exciting with McNicholson (10/1c) pipping the front-running Pivot Bridge (11/1) just before the line. Edward Cawley’s 33/1 shot Oscar Buzz was the only other entrant to really feature in the latter stages, completing nine lengths clear of fourth placed Shemshal (20/1).

Punchestown’s Grade C Three.ie Handicap Chase went to 8/1 chance Mallowney, the hold-up charge picking off his opponents from his inside position. The Davy Russell ridden Mallowney took to the front following the penultimate and managed to extend from second placed Art Of Logistics (also 8/1). Nicky Henderson’s Tanks For That (12/1) secured third from the stong favourite Ned Buntline (11/4).

Ger Fox was able to lead Jacks Island (25/1) to a cross country victory in the third. The 11-year-old was prominent throughout, part of the chasing pack that looked to pounce on long time leader Chestnut Friar (40/1). The eventual winner took the lead as soon as the fourth from home and held from the flailing top weight Keep On Track (16/1). Uncle Junior (4/1) rounded off the first three for Willie and Patrick Mullins.

Jessica Harrington’s Jetson (20/1) would finally topple four-time winner Quevega (9/10) in the Ladbrokes World Series Hurdle, causing the mare to be retired by her handler Mullins. There was just a length-and-a-half between the pair, the former being produced first to take the lead over the third-last. Despite staying on strongly, the grey would be unable to reduce the deficit with At Fishers Cross (4/1) third again following his third in the World Hurdle at Cheltenham.

There was another massive field handicap following the classy Grade One, this 25 strong 3m hurdles event being taken by 20/1 shout Off The Charts. Dessie Hughes’ charge would take to the front just after the last despite a weak effort, managing to sustain an advantage of a neck over Rebecca Curtis’ Bob Keown (12/1). Top weight The Crafty Butcher (16/1) was given just too much to do in third with Hughes’ Everything Zain (25/1) snatching the final minor place.

Willie Mullins’ Champagne Fever was the strong 5/4 favourite for the Ryanair Novice Chase after his heroics in defeat in Cheltenham’s Arkle. The Rich Ricci front-runner failed to recreate his Prestbury Park display, falling away from his prominent position to see Tom George’s God’s Own (25/1) run out the half-a-length victor. A future Arkle runner-up himself, God’s Own would take the last neck and neck with nearest rivals Moscow Mannon (20/1) and Balder Succes (11/4), George’s charge just holding on in a bunch finish.

The penultimate race was the Mares Novice Hurdle with Morga (5/1) taking the plaudits for Desmond McDonogh. In another closely contested finish, Morga was just able to secure her first place opening up a half-a-length gap over 10/3 fancy Vicky De L’Oasis. Little King Robin (16/1) took third as connections of the favourite, Urticaire (5/2) had to settle for a distant fourth.

Jessica Harrington oversaw a second day hat-trick as High Stratos (14/1) scored in the concluding Flat race for the handler. The five-year-old put three lengths between herself and Elizabeth Doyle’s Kauto Grand Mogol (9/2) who stole second from 20/1 shot Starry Knight. Favourite backers would rue their day as Voluptueux (11/4) was five lengths off the winner in fourth.
