The Punchestown Festival is set to kick off on Tuesday and Willie Mullins is likely to dominate once again. He has a vast array of hugely talented horses to go to war with and is undoubtedly the man to follow once again. With that in mind, we’ve picked out four of his potential runners that could be worth backing. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Some wanted to take on Kopek Des Bordes at the Cheltenham Festival, but it proved futile as he ran out an impressive winner. None of his potential rivals lining up at Punchestown look particularly threatening and consequently, almost no price is too short. Next season’s plan remains to be seen but he’ll surely be very hard to beat in this race.
Ballyburn heads the ante-post market for this race but it’s hard to be confident after his Cheltenham display. Stablemate Lecky Watson got the job done in the Brown Advisory and there could be more to come from this clearly progressive sort. He’s the one to beat on that evidence and the ratings suggest there’s little between them, making Lecky Watson the better option.
Final Demand didn’t quite have the pace to live with The New Lion and The Yellow Clay at Cheltenham, so three miles should bring out the best in him. Clearly he has a big engine and a significant amount of ability as the six-year-old won a Grade 1 at the Dublin Racing Festival in good style.
Galopin Des Champs lost little in defeat when second in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham and should have far too much for his rivals here. There’s no Fastorslow this year, the softer ground is likely to suit, and it’ll be a big surprise if he fails to get the job done here. The 11-time Grade 1 winner is available at odds against currently, which could prove to be very generous.
