Nigel Twiston-Davies – My Cheltenham Runners 14/03/2018

Nigel Twiston-Davies Weekly Column

Day One is out of the way for the yard and although things didn’t necessarily work out the way he expected, Nigel remains bullish with his love of all things Cheltenham Festival there for all to see. With runners every day it’s back to work for Wednesday afternoon and the three horses Nigel has entered on Wednesday are assessed by the man himself below.

Nigel’s Charity Bet

As always, we’ve given Nigel a £25 charity bet to place on a horse of his choice – and this afternoon it will be on……

Ballyoptic  Each Way  2.10pm Cheltenham Wednesday

“It may surprise you but he reminds me a lot of Blaklion in his style and his untapped ability as well, and I am hoping he has a lot more to offer as he gets stronger and more mature over the next few years. This year’s RSA Chase looks as competitive as it has ever been but we have won on heavy ground at Wetherby last tome put over the three miles and I am hopeful that may even give us the edge this afternoon. If he jumps as well as he can and gets a clear run he won’t be far away and is my best chance of the day with Sam in the saddle.”

If Ballyoptic wins or places, we’ll donate the winnings to the Injured Jockeys Fund!

Wednesday Runners:

Turning Gold 4.50pm Cheltenham Wednesday

I think he has a better chance than the prices suggest and you need to remember that he did win on heavy going at Haydock last time out and if you can win on that it can’t be too heavy for him here. He does have an extra seven pounds for that victory but I don’t see him as too badly handicapped, and he could threaten the places on a good day.

Volcano 5.30pm Cheltenham Wednesday

“A very nice horse from what I have seen at home but this is his first run for us after he arrived from the Christian Williams stable. He has more wins in him of that I am sure but you just never know how good the Irish are in these events and I will settle for a decent run though a place is not beyond a possibility if the race unfolds his way.”
