Matt’s 52-1 soft ground acca for Goodwood on Saturday

Goodwood Racecourse

The usual April showers have been late arriving this year, May seeing a lot of soft ground. Those are the prevailing conditions once more for the ITV meeting at Goodwood on Saturday. The ability to handle the mud will be all important so we have dug into the card to find three horses that will relish this soft ground.

A busy day of racing also sees the ITV cameras at Haydock, York and the Curragh where their 2000 Guineas is the feature. there is also racing at Newmarket, Stratford and Lingfield to close out the Saturday racing action and our horse racing tips.

1.40 Goodwood – MansionBet Watch And Bet Handicap

A perfect 2/2 on soft ground and 2/2 on good to soft, it’s fair to say that Prince Alex is at his best when the mud is flying. Hugely progressive last season, winning five handicaps on the bounce, he started 2021 from a mark twenty-three pounds above where his winning run started.

That still looked within his grasp at Salisbury when he made his return to action. The winner of that Salisbury handicap was a similarly progressive type to him and the return to a softer surface should see him build on that effort.

2.50 Goodwood – Download The MansionBet App Handicap

Unbeaten in the first three starts of his career, William Haggas looks to have a nice type on his hands with Aldaary. All of those three starts have come on soft ground. One win each on good to soft, soft and heavy.

He is twelve pounds higher than for his Ascot win last time out. Despite that, he still looks very much the one they all have to beat as he won that race with masses in hand. A half-brother to a multiple Listed winner, he looks more than capable of running at that level himself after this.

3.25 Goodwood – MansionBet Best Odds Guaranteed Tapster Stakes

Four flat starts on soft ground for On To Victory has seen him live up to his name on three occasions. He was second at this track the only other time he has encountered soft ground, a winner on this surface over hurdles as well.

His high point in 2020 was a win in the November handicap at Doncaster from a mark of 99. He needs another step up on that level of form now in a level weights race but he tends to be ready to roll first time up and these conditions are a big plus to his chances.
