Tips for Goodwood Races

Located in the grounds of the Goodwood house, Goodwood is best known for its annual Glorious Goodwood festival but also hosts other high quality meetings throughout the summer which are regularly shown on ITV racing.

Course: One of the most unique tracks in the UK, as can be seen from the course map above. Known for its testing undulations and sharp turns, the final three furlongs or so are all downhill, leading to quickly run races. The distances used for the most famous races have their own names:

  • Six furlongs – “Stewards’ Cup Course”
  • One mile 2 furlongs – “Craven Course”
  • One mile four furlongs – “Gratwicke Course”
  • One mile six furlongs – “Bentinck Course”
  • Two miles five furlongs – “Cup Course

Because of the unique nature of the course, our Goodwood tips often favour horses who either have previous experience at this track, or nimble types who have suggested that they can cope with the nature of it.

Draw Bias: There is no strong draw bias at Goodwood for our tips to consider.

Feature Meeting: The “Glorious Festival” – best known as “Glorious Goodwood”, features a large number of Group races at the end of July & start of August. Run from Tuesday to Saturday, the Group 1 highlights are the Sussex Stakes on Wednesday over a mile, the Goodwood Cup over two miles on the Thursday and the Nassau Stakes over just shy of one mile, two furlongs on the Saturday. The Stewards’ Cup, a Heritage Handicap, is also a highlight of the meeting, with a large field tackling just six furlongs in a busy sprint to the line.
