Martin Keighley Speaks To myracing

Fontwell Racecourse

On Tuesday 12th June Southwell racecourse plays host to a seven-race card sponsored by myracing.com and with the weather set to be fine right through until the evening, we’re expecting a decent crowd in Nottinghamshire.

Southwell is a dual purpose venue which boasts a jumps course found on the inside of the All Weather track. We’re over the obstacles on Tuesday and Southwell is very much a course with tight turns which favour those ridden handily, especially on the quicker summer ground that we’re expecting. The stiff fences take plenty of jumping meaning it can be a difficult place for novices with fences coming up quickly down both straights.

Tips and previews for every race from Southwell will be available on the website from Monday evening, complete with full reasoning for each one.

As part of the build-up to Tuesday’s meeting, myracing.com spoke to trainer Martin Keighley about his potential runners on the card. Keighley has had four winners in the last four weeks, so his horses are in fine form and in the last five years at Southwell, 19 of his 42 runners have finished in the first four places.

“He’s in really good form at home. Not sure he quite stayed last time as Towcester, as we know that’s a very stiff track. He loves Southwell, both his wins have come here. I think he has a live chance, although I’d be a bit worried about Dan Skelton’s Too Many Diamonds if he turns up.”

“Used to race for Karl Burke on the flat. He’s been a little bit disappointing of late, but we freshened him up before his last outing. The drop back in trip should see an improvement.”

“Not certain to run at Southwell as he has a couple of engagements. Showed some decent form on the flat for Sir Michael Stoute a few years ago. Just had the one run for us so far where he finished down the field at Wincanton. He’s been jumping and working well at home recently and I’d expect a better run this time.”

A big thank you to Martin for speaking to us about his planned runners for Southwell and we wish him and his team all the best.
