Major market mover: Catterick runner backed into 13/8f from 15/2 on Wednesday

We like to keep an eye on what the betting markets are doing and we also like to keep you all informed. That’s why our market movers page is updated every morning but occasionally there’s a particularly significant steamer that warrants special attention.

There’s one runner in the final race at Catterick on Wednesday that is the subject of sustained market support. Available at 15/2 on Tuesday evening, the price has capitulated into just 13/8 so we’ll take a detailed look at the horse’s chances below. 5.25 Catterick

Jesmond Dawn has only had three starts to date and the best of those efforts arguably came on debut at Ripon in May. The 12-length winner put in one of the most dominant performances from a juvenile in recent years and if you take him out of the race, Jesmond Dawn’s effort would have looked very fair.

We then didn’t see him again until April and he’s since been gelded. It was a fairly average effort on seasonal reappearance over course and distance earlier this month. He might have gone a little too hard from the front on the heavy ground and may well have needed the run.

Stepping up to a mile at Newcastle next time clearly didn’t suit and he gradually lost his position in the final furlong. Returning to 7f for his handicap debut certainly looks like a sensible move with that in mind. Plenty of improvement could be on the cards now handicapping and we should start to see what he’s made of.

Whilst it’s difficult to know exactly what to expect on his first handicap start here, the market is certainly predicting a significantly improved performance. This situation is worth keeping an eye one and it’ll be interesting to see if the price falls any further.
