Newmarket’s July festival continues on Friday and we have seven more excellent races to enjoy. We’ve picked out some key trends in the race if the day, the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes, and Irish trainer Willie McCreery sends a rare runner over to Newmarket on Friday. Keep an eye out for one runner who is officially a whopping 11lb ahead of the handicapper and has to be of interest with that in mind. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Friday’s big Group 1 is the Falmouth Stakes, run over a mile and it’s open to fillies and mares aged three and upwards. Here are some of the more significant trends over the last decade.
Six of the last 10 winners have been three-year-olds, which bodes well for the likes of Precise and Balantina, but no five-year-olds have come out on op during this period.
Seven of the last 10 winners had an official rating of 111 or higher, so Venetian Lace and Venosa have bit to find with regards to that particular trend. The remaining five runners should be fine.
Ryan Moore is the only jockey to have won the race multiple times in the last 10 years, winning it on three occasions, and he rides Precise for regular boss Aidan O’Brien on this occasion.
Trends verdict: Precise
Irish trainer Willie McCreery doesn’t send runners to Newmarket too often so it’s interesting that he sends one over for the big race of the day. McCreery’s only other Newmarket runner in the last five seasons managed to win on the Rowley Mile so we’ve assessed the mare’s chances of coming out on top.
Jancis is a capable performer on her day but the jury is still out on whether or not she’s a Group 1 mare. She was comfortably beaten by Blue Bolt at Royal Ascot last time out and has bit to find on that form. The daughter of Tamayuz did land a Group 2 on seasonal debut and has a fair chance on that evidence.
Wine Dark Sea won a 1m3f handicap at Carlisle by 13 lengths on his most recent start and is due to go up 17lb for that wide-margin success. Harry Charlton’s gelding carries a 6lb penalty instead on this occasion, which means he’s apparently 11lb ahead of the handicapper. He’ll have to prove himself over this longer trip but a big run is surely on the cards, provided he doesn’t run out of gas.
