Statistics never provide any guarantees in this sport but they can be very helpful pointers. There’s one particular stat that is attention-worthy at Nottingham on Tuesday, involving Trevor Whelan. He has only had two rides at the track in 2025 and both of them won, giving him a 100 per cent record. Whelan is set to take just one ride there on Tuesday and the horse in question is an interesting handicap debutante. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Darn Hot Mystery made her debut in a Kempton maiden over 7f back in August and she was a respectable third. Showing signs of inexperience at the start, she broke slowly and was a little too keen in the early stages. Henry Candy’s filly stuck to her task well however and showed some promise.
She took a step forward when denied by a short head at Lingfield next time. Ridden more prominently that day, she took the lead heading into the final furlong and was only just collared on the line. The daughter of Too Darn Hot might have won had she not hung to her right in the closing stages.
Her fourth back at Kempton next time was probably a tad disappointing but the switch to handicaps could make a massive difference. There’s evidence in her pedigree which suggests the step up in trip will suit and connections will be happy with an opening mark of 72.
It looks like a competitive race for the grade and there are several similarly unexposed types amongst the nine-runner field. Whelan will be keen to maintain his unbeaten record and Darn Hot Mystery should have every chance on handicap debut.
