We’re used to Irish trainers sending runners over for Britain’s lesser meetings but it’s a fairly rare occurrence when it happens the other way around. Jennie Candlish-trained Irish runners are even less common, as she has only had six throughout her entire training career. She is sending one runner over to Clonmel for the first time ever on Sunday and the horse in question is one for the notebook. Thank You Blue had a successful spring campaign and was a comfortable winner of a handicap hurdle at Southwell in March. He was always travelling strongly that day and took up the running after the third last, before sealing the deal with an excellent jump at the final flight.
A 6lb rise in the weights proved to be no obstacle at Kempton next time and he duly obliged over a shorter trip. Pulling away at the line, he scored by a length-and-a-quarter despite jumping to his right at times and is therefore likely to be very competitive in this claiming hurdle.
Recent winner Circus Act will surely be dangerous, having scored cosily in handicap company at Down Royal when last seen over hurdles. Falcon Park won a couple of handicaps over the winter, including one here over 2m1f, and the drop in grade could inspire a return to form.
Candlish’s gelding has still only had nine starts over hurdles, winning three times, and this looks like a very good opportunity. It’s certainly interesting that Thank You Blue is being sent all that way for a claimer and you may want to keep a close eye on the betting.
