Inside The Notebook – Week 7 10/01/17

Now that we are onto week 7 of this article, those who have been mentioned in previous weeks have begun to run again. Cobolobo at Chepstow was the biggest success this week when scoring at Chepstow at 16/1. Englishwoman added a 9/4 success on Tuesday with a quick reappearance from the Week 6 horses. Let’s take a look at those who have caught the eye in the last seven days.

03/01/17

• Holdbacktheriver – A half brother to Kalane, he made a smart debut in the bumper at Bangor. He may have been slightly flattered with the race falling apart up the straight as the leaders went too hard but he is more of a long term prospect and looks a nice recruit for coming seasons.
• Robins Legend – Much improved on handicap debut sporting a first time visor. He didn’t look to stay 3 miles having travelled strongly and would be of interest back down in trip next time given how lightly raced he is. His dam won over 2m4f and 2m6f on decent ground and he may be a nice horse for the likes of Perth in the Spring/Summer.

04/01/17

• Storm Alert – Taken round the houses in the opening amateur riders race at Hereford, he stayed on well into 5th. The yard always do well at Exeter so he would be of huge interest pitched up there next time out on soft ground.
• More Than Luck – Was 3rd in a point to point behind the smart pair Robinroyale and Lough Derg Jewel.  The now 109 rated Greyed A was well beaten off that day, giving the form a sound look. He is now eligible for a handicap mark (after his Hereford 7th) with one of about 105-108 looking likely, he could be interesting next time out.

• Exquisite Ruby – Newcomer from Charlie Hills yard, she shaped well in an ordinary maiden on debut. The yard are just 1/30 since the start of November so likely to be plenty more to come. Her full sister won off a mark of 84 and her 1/2 brother is the smart Maarek so she’s bred to make her mark further down the line.

06/01/17

• Mullionheir – First run in a Class 4 since June 2015 when a sound 4th at Kempton. That was from a four pound lower mark than his most recent winning mark and he looks ready to strike on the sand in the coming weeks with trainer John Best’s runners hinting at a return to form for the Kent yard.

07/01/17

• Alcanar – Shaped really well on hurdling debut despite making mistakes. He travelled well into the race, well beaten by the front pair who both look smart. By Teofilo, better ground would likely suit so a couple more runs this winter should obtain a workable handicap mark for better ground in the Spring.

08/01/17

• Lady Markby – Has kept pretty warm company on her three starts over hurdles so far but has shown steady improvement. She should stay further, not stopping up the Fontwell hill on Sunday. A step up in trip on her handicap debut next time out would make her of interest.
