The Qatar Goodwood Festival is tantalisingly close and we’re in for five days of top class action featuring a large number of Group races. With the action beginning on Tuesday 30th July and running until Saturday 3rd August there are three Group 1 races, namely the £1m Qatar Sussex Stakes on Wednesday over a mile, the Goodwood Cup over two miles on the Thursday and the Nassau Stakes on the final day, run over just short of one mile, two furlongs. Another highlight of the meeting is The Stewards’ Cup, a Heritage Handicap, which usually attracts a large field with a frantic pace to get home over 6 furlongs.

The opening day’s main attraction is the meeting’s newest Group 1, the Qatar Goodwood Cup. Last season Stradivarius stayed on best of all to get up close home and John Gosden’s superstar looks set to defend his crown this time around.

Wednesday boasts the biggest prize money of the week for a single race in the Qatar Sussex Stakes. Former winners of this race are some of the best horses to have ever graced these shores and some of the most recent victors include Henrythenavigator, Rip Van Winkle, Canford Cliffs, Toronado, Kingman and of course the all conquering Frankel.

It’s Ladies Day on Thursday, and Friday plays host to the Qatar King George Stakes. Battaash successfully defended his crown in the race last year and recent signs point to Charlie Hills’ mount turning up to land an unprecedented hattrick.

Taking centre stage on the final day is the Stewards Cup, a big field 6f handicap usually run at a fierce pace and securing over £155k for the winner.

As well as playing host to some of the best horses on the planet, Glorious Goodwood is also know for it’s elegant fashion. Both ladies and gentlemen play their part in attaining ‘The Goodwood Look’ making it the perfect meeting for horse racing newbies and knowledgeable punters alike.
