1.40pm – myracing.com Beginner’s Chase

Free Tip: Stephen Hero at 1/1 with Bet365

An interesting little Beginners’ Chase to kick off the My Racing day at Worcester races, but we can’t see past the strong favourite Stephen Hero. The highest rated hurdler in the field, receiving a mark of 132 for a solid 2nd place in April, he jumped well to finish a solid 2nd at Market Rasen last time out, well clear of 3rd. While he was no match for the winner Risk A Fine, but for a novicey error 3 from home he would have gone much closer and he wasn’t given too hard a race. He still beat Greybougg by 13 lengths and that is by far the best Chase form on show. Romeo Americo (6/1) unseated on his last chase run and is yet to come close to his Uttoxeter performance where he finished 2nd, but even that could well not be enough with Stephen Hero likely to improve for his debut. The other main dangers come from Mr Burgees and Macarthur, neither of who have taken on the bigger obstacles yet. Macarthur is getting on at 11 years of age and it’s a very late time to swap to chasing, and he had a poor strike rate of 1 in 20 off marks in the 110 range. Mr Burgees is likely the main danger, having been rated 130 over hurdles, but he fell last time out when weakning badly and has looked badly out of form so far this season – plus our selection has experience over him!

Free Tip: Driving Well at 18/1 EW with Bet365

A big price outsider for us in the second, Driving Well for Robert Dunne and Arthur Whiting. His only chase appearance so far was a disappointment, sent off 25/1 and he tailed off over 3m 2f. Dropped back in trip, he’s got previous Worcester form – finishing 2nd here over hurdles last year – and he jumped eye catchingly well on his chase debut. He was dropped 3lb for that and given he was in decent form over hurdles (2nd at Taunton on his last run in October) he should come on for his seasonal reappearence and hopefully provide us a surprise at a nice price.

Free Tip: Red Whisper at 6/1 EW with Bet365

I was torn between Shady Lane and Red Whisper for this next race, and with the huge difference in prices it seems an absolute no brainer. Shady Lane has ability but is awfully inconsistent and 2/1 is just not a price I really want to take. If he turns up on his day he can win off 97, like he showed over hurdles at Fakenham in December, but he’s not shown much since at all.

On the other hand, Red Whisper is also inconsistent, but with a price of 6/1 there’s a lot more value available. He gets in here off a mark of 91, which he finished 2nd off in April, and I’m willing to forgive his fall last time out – he just never looked like he got into the race. If he can run to either of his Towcester performances from April he’ll be right in there with a shout, and it’s far from the strongest race with the other horse near the top of the market Wak A Turtle not looking well handicapped off 93 especially given he hasn’t run under rules since September 2013.

Free Tip: Aalim at 4/1 with Bet365

A Class 3 Hurdle, with a couple of recognisable names. Aalim promised a lot but has yet to really deliver, and because of that his handicap mark has been dropped from 133 back to 130. He’s been racing in some very valuable races, not least at Newton Abbot and Cartmel, and I’m hoping the break will have reinvigorated him. John Ferguson knows how to get them ready after a break and given how long Aalim was on the go for last season (he didn’t get much of a break at all) the 5 month break should help freshen him up significantly. The ground will be much more suitable for him than some other races he’s tried, as I’m convinced he needs good ground – even if he has run well on Heavy in his flat days. Street Entertainer looks handicapped to his best after his 7lb rise for winning at Perth, as does Cut The Corner after his 3 runs in May, and I’m hopeful that with the break and 3lb drop Aalim is ready to take advantage of it and show a bit more of his true potential.

4.20pm – Worcester News Maiden Hurdle (Div I)

Free Tip: Dubai Start at 13/8 with Bet365

4.50pm – Worcester News Maiden Hurdle (Div II)

Free Tip: Prince Of Poets at 3/1 with Bet365

5.25pm – myracing.com for Free Royal Ascot Tips Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

Free Tip: Shot In The Dark at 9/1 EW with Bet365

A 7lb rise for our pick Shot In The Dark in a tricky little race to finish, but we have one of the best jockeys in the race on board with Nico de Boinville and in these conditionals races that counts for a lot. Shot In The Dark was a 71 rated flat horse at his peak, showing he’s got a decent engine in him, and while he’s been inconsistent over hurdles the penny seems to have finally dropped and he’s improved dramatically recently. He comes to Worcester having run very well at big odds at Stratford, and while he’s been hiked in the weights he really caught my eye last time out and he saw out his race very well. The ground should be fine for him and his trainer has been in good form, with a win and a 2nd place from his 3 runners in the last two weeks – Glens Wobbly didn’t just win but hacked up, and it’s an eye catching booking. The slight step up in trip from last time out and from 2m at Taunton should see more improvement and I’m hoping we can finish the day with a nice price winner!
