Well known Irish trainer Charles Byrnes is sending one horse across the Irish Sea to run in the 2.20pm at Southwell on Wednesday that goes by the name of Not For You. The trainer, who openly admits that he likes to back his own horses, is well known for landing a gamble or two in the past. In 2016, he sent three horses to Roscommon and all three, who were big prices early in the morning, went on to win in decisive fashion, hitting the bookmakers for roughly €5 million. The trio were available at enormous combined odds of 3,314/1 earlier in the day, whereas the treble went off at starting prices of just 42/1.
Getting back to Not For You, let’s take a look at the chances of his runner at Southwell on Wednesday. Now a 10 year old, the bay gelding by Beneficial has tasted success just two times from his twenty-two runs so far in his career. The first of those came in a Novice Hurdle way back in 2013 at Wexford. In July 2018, he got his second win on the board at Killarney over fences in a 0-102 handicap off a mark of 97. Interestingly, both his victories have come on very sharp tracks so he will be very much suited to Southwell, a sharp track inside the sand course. He ran a poor race at Wexford next time out and has a hefty enough mark of 105 to overcome but K.J. Brouder takes off a very valuable seven pounds whilst this is also his sole ride of the day. Being by Beneficial, we expect the step up in trip to bring out some more improvement and don’t be shocked if this is punted off the boards. He opened up 5/1 but could well go off a lot shorter.
