The Big Debate – Winx V Enable

The flat season has ended and it has been another year where the mares or fillies’ have dominated. But what one is the world’s best? The globe-trotting Enable or the imperious Winx? This question has really divided opinion.

The Australian seven year old mare Winx has now racked up an astonishing 29 run winning streak. She quietened her doubters once again in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley at the end of October when many people, especially in the UK, said Benbatl may well put it up to her. She left him for dust but she still can’t win can she? For many years now, Winx has been accused of beating “nobodies”. Even after winning 29 on the trot, she has yet to get the respect she thoroughly deserves.

Anyone who is into sectionals will know just how good this mare is. She didn’t receive a rating of 130 from thin air, she is that rating on merit. Does she have to leave Australia to prove herself? That is another question that has divided the public but the answer is probably no. Did Frankel leave the UK? Did Frankel run over a mile and a half which is the distance he was bred for? No. He was very shrewdly campaigned, just like Winx. As a racing fan, isn’t it absolutely fantastic to see a seven year old mare still running? It’s quite a rare thing these days at the top level. Appreciate a spectacular mare while she is still around because she won’t be on our TV’s for much longer.

Moving onto John Gosden’s Enable, the word “WOW” is the word that can be used to describe her. When it comes to achievements, there is no doubt whatsoever that this girl has achieved more than her Australian counterpart. She has won in Ireland, the UK, France and America. She has beaten everything thrown at her and won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe two years running which is an incredible feat. She became the very first Arc winner to win at the Breeders Cup in the same season. She is an absolute superstar.

The underlying question is if she met Winx, who would win? Who really cares? It will never happen, such discussions are immaterial. Both horses are absolute champions, both light up the planet and both are masters of their distance. Enable is better over 1m 4f, Winx is better over 1m to 1m 2f. We have to be impressed with the durability and consistency of Winx and we equally have to be impressed with the incredible global achievements of Enable.
