We learnt plenty at Epsom over the weekend, as Aidan O’Brien mopped up the Coronation Cup, Oaks and the Derby. Some of the beaten horses in behind ran massive races however and they could be worth following in the future. We’ve picked out three horses that couldn’t get the job done at Epsom but could well win some major prizes later this summer. These include a Derby-placed horse that can flourish over longer trips. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
A drop in trip could be on the cards for Calandagan, which will facilitate a return to winning ways. Jan Brueghel outstayed him in the Coronation Cup and he’s a horse that only just does enough. Francis-Henri Graffard’s four-year-old wasn’t beaten far by City Of Troy over an extended 1m2f last term and can win plenty of races over that sort of trip.
Her supporters may have been a little confused when watching the Oaks, as Wayne Lordan forced her to the front in the early stages. It looked like she was being used as a pacemaker but managed to maintain a strong gallop all the way. Going on to finish second to stablemate, she can win plenty of races at the top level on that evidence.
Joseph O’Brien’s colt ran a cracker to finish second in the Derby, despite lacking the pace to challenge. Races likes the Queen’s Vase and the St Leger are open to him now and he could prove hard to beat. The classic St Leger route of York’s Great Voltigeur before going on to Doncaster could be a solid plan going forward. Adding these three horses to your notebooks is certainly a good idea.
